Milan: Black – White – Black – White

Posted on June 23, 2006

The late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping  famously said that it doesn’t matter whether the cat is black or white, as long as it catches mice. The Milanese fashion tribe would beg to disagree.

After recent Spring collections enshrined a sober black and white palette as this summer’s ultimate expression of chic, Via Montenapoleone fashion denizens are toeing the (party) line: every woman in sight is wearing demure black and white, and this in a city that is not usually afraid of sporting every colour in the rainbow, and some.

The few who are not wearing de rigeur black and white are trying to fall below the fashion police radar by wearing plain black! And the virus seems to be spreading according to this article in the Chicago Tribune :

In a rare confluence of style, black and white is hot all over. In fashion. In furnishings. In Milan, in High Point. You name it.

Bergdorf Goodman in New York declared black and white "the season’s dynamic new duo." Target’s spring home catalog was dripping in the color combo. And Jayson Home & Garden here in Chicago recently unveiled Vintage Glam, a new collection of old (vintage) furniture in which many of the pieces get their "glam" from a thick coat of white paint and/or a recovering in black or black-and-white fabric.
